Baby Bib Showdown
Baby and toddler bib technology has come a long way from the basic cloth bibs most of us wore. Today a simple “Bib” search on amazon brings up hundreds of different bibs and styles. Choosing the right one will make your life much easier during mealtime. So where do you start? Lets skip right over the antiquated cloth bib and talk about two popular baby bibs that have some awesome modernizations: the OXO Tot Roll-Up Bib and the BabyBjörn Soft Bib, both bibs grow with your baby, both are comfortable and contour to your child’s chest, both are waterproof, both offer a deep-formed reservoir to catch liquid and solid spills and both wipe clean, but only one bib wins the Babblist seal of approval.
On the Left: the OXO Tot Roll-Up Bib
The OXO Tot Roll-Up Bib was the first plastic bib I purchased for Ona. I had heard great things about the BabyBjörn Bib but I was looking for a bib that could be easily tucked away in our diaper bag since we are often on the go. It’s designed so that the waterproof fabric portion of the bib neatly rolls up into the silicone pocket and is secured with a small button closure. The end result is a compact portable bib that takes up very little room in your bag. Not only is this feature great for a clean bib, it’s even better with a soiled one. No need to fully clean your bib or even spoon before transporting them home. Simply place the dirty spoon in the bib pocket and roll up the bib as described. Unfortunately, this is where my love affair ends. Because the bib incorporates fabric the dry time is just way too long. I often found the bib at lunchtime was still wet from breakfast. The fabric is also prone to staining and the seams collect food easily that need to be scrubbed out or placed in a washing machine in order for it to get truly clean negating the whole “wipe it clean” feature. My last gripe is the Velcro closure that OXO Tot says is “strong” and “secure enough to resist tot’s tugging”, by the time Ona was 11 months she was easily able to take this bib off. At first it was pretty secure, but the reality is Velcro just never holds up over time especially when it’s put in the washing machine again and again. And NO, I did not secure the Velcro closure before putting it in the washer like you are instructed with all washable Velcro because that would require a level of effort that I lost when I became a busy mom. After about 4 months of use both of the OXO bibs were trashed and I was ready to try something new.
On the right: the BabyBjörn Soft Bib
I ordered two of the BabyBjörn Soft Bibs to replace the OXO bibs. They are entirely made of plastic that is more structured than the OXO Bib. This works in its favor since it allows the spill pocket to maintain a wide, deep and angled shape that makes it very successful in collecting spills without ever collapsing. The plastic material and absence of any sewn seams makes this bib a breeze to clean. It’s as easy as wiping it down, running it under water or throwing it in the dishwasher, plus there is ZERO dry time so you’re always ready for the next meal. The unique neckband and closure is both soft around your child’s neck and difficult to yank off but will break away easily in case of an emergency. The bib is very well constructed and after using it for seven months it still looks pretty new. I do wish it had the ability to fold up but I think a feature like that would only come with compromises like we see in the OXO bib. And the reality is that the bib wipes clean so easily that you don’t have to worry about putting it back in your bag dirty.
And the winner is…
In the plastic bib category it’s clear the BabyBjörn Soft Bib wins the show. It has a superior design from the spill pocket to the neck strap and closure and it’s so simple to clean. The OXO Tot Roll-Up bib is a fine product and does a good job catching spills however the extra effort needed to clean the bib and the Velcro closure put it at a disadvantage to its competition.
